iPod on the TV (with an RCA cable)

5th Generation iPodWell it’s Christmas Day and the family and I were sitting down to watch a movie on the TV. So since we are all in a room that doesn’t have a DVD player (well actually no room does – I just use the XBOX) I figured I’d just use my 5th generation iPod to play a couple movies off of it. Plugged up a regular cable and couldn’t figure out why I got audio but no video. So I searched google and came across this article that helped me out. Here’s just another place on the online world if you too have this problem.

You’ll need a 3 color cable RCA to 1/8″ cable. The 3 color (Red, White, & Yellow) plug into the tv and the 1/8″ plugs into the iPod.

A Gotcha: Apple’s inputs don’t directly map to the RCA inputs on your TV. In English? The Yellow video input doesn’t align with the yellow video input on the cable, the red and white don’t line up directly either.

So in order to run a video you need to plug the

  • red cable into the yellow video input on your tv
  • yellow cable into the white audio input on your tv
  • white cable into the red audio input on your tv

Next, using your iPod go to the Videos >Video Settings >Video TV is set to “On”.

Plug you shold now see the video on your TV … wo hoo!
